Michigan Breaks Online Gambling Revenue Record in August

Michigan’s online gambling industry posted its highest-ever numbers in August, pulling in $312.5 million in gross revenue. According to the Michigan Gaming Control Board, online casino and sports betting contributed to the rebound – a sharp turnaround after several slower months.
FanDuel and MotorCity Overtake Rivals in Online Casino Market
The lion’s share of August’s total came from online gambling, which pulled in $263.3 million – an increase over both July and last summer’s figures. After promotional credits were factored out, adjusted iGaming receipts landed at $247.2 million.
The operator rankings saw a shake-up, as FanDuel, working with MotorCity, claimed the top position for online casino revenue at $71.1 million. MGM and BetMGM, who led in July, took second place; DraftKings and the Bay Mills Indian Community finished third.
Sports Betting Sees Bigger Numbers as Wagers Increase
Sports betting in Michigan rebounded well also, with gross receipts climbing to $49.3 million. The state’s betting handle hit $338.9 million, nearly 20 percent above the previous month and 21 percent higher than a year ago. Adjusted sports betting receipts totaled $34.2 million.
FanDuel and MotorCity also led in sports betting revenue, with DraftKings and BetMGM following in gross receipts and total handle.
Tax Haul Grows While Detroit’s Casinos Lag
All told, Michigan collected $53.7 million in state taxes from online gambling in August, while Detroit’s city government received $13.8 million and tribal operators contributed $6.2 million to their own bodies.
Meanwhile, Detroit’s three commercial casinos brought in $106.9 million for August, down 5 percent from the same time last year. Most of that total came from slots and table games, with retail sports betting accounting for a much smaller share.
