As someone who once played a MMORPG for several years (Dark Age of Camelot) and invested waaaaay too many hours in it, I can honestly say I don't see it the way the author of this piece does. While I'm not a "grinder" its common for me to play a session lasting 8-12 hours on the weekend, much like I did in my MMORPG.

However, I never looked at poker this way at all. In an MMORPG you can actually win individual battles repeatedly just by being slightly more experienced or having a class advantage. In poker, anybody can truly beat anybody at any moment. While one player might not be able to win in the long run, short term victories are certainly much more possible.

Also, in MMORPGs players form groups or even entire guilds and play with a common purpose or theme... in poker that is called "collusion". MMORPGs are very social games while poker is generally a very individual one. I know, here we are on a forum about poker, a social online gathering place (not that MMORPGs don't have these, trust me they do). However, we can exactly get together and enter tournaments like we are going to siege a castle. Once we are actually playing we're on our own.

From what I see, about the only things that online poker and MMORPGs have in common is that they require a computer and can take up a lot of a person's time. At least with poker you can actually make a living at it if you so choose.
