Default Tournament players please help :)

    Hello all,

First of all, I looked around forum for some answers but couldn't find out exactly what I need so figured I have a go at a new thread. Any advice would be much appreciated.

In a couple months I plan on playing the biggest (player wise/money wise) tournament I have ever played but the problem is I only play cash games and the odd tournament. The tournaments I'm used to playing are generally 30-40k start stack blinds 25/50 no anti (so let's say around 600BB start stack).

Now here's my problem. The tournament which I'm going to be playing in has a 10k start stack and 50/100 blinds no anti. So off the bat I'm down to 100bb. What I would like is any advice/tips and experience you guys would have and share with me.

    Thank you in advance :)
    Andre.

This is a good question, and one which is much more complex than it would first seem. I don't know how experienced you are at poker, but tournament play is very different from cash play, and you have to play a very different style to the one you're probably used to as a cash player.

100BBs isn't a super short starting stack, but in general, you're looking to play much looser and much more aggressive than you would for a cash game, or than you would for a tourney where you start off with 600BBs. You'll be finding yourself short-stacked quicker than you're used to, so you'll need to play more aggressively than you otherwise would. You won't have time to wait for that perfect spot, and you'll need to start pushing harder with hands like TPTK, and doing things like 3-betting with weaker pocket pairs. Your opponents will likely be doing the same (unless they're really nitty) so you can put them on wider ranges than you would in a deep-stack game. When they check raise you, they might just have 2-pair, rather than a boat.

So in a nutshell, expect the game to be much more LAG, and widen your range too. I'd strongly recommend getting some SnG and tourney practice in online before you play your big tournament.

I'd like to give more specific advice, but I'd need more detail. What size tournament are you playing? Live or online? How slowly are the blinds going up? DO you know what percentage of the field get paid? All of these are important factors.

EDIT: Sorry, just realised that this is in the "beginners' questions" section. Mind if I ask how much poker you've played in the past? I don't want to use too much jargon or complex terminology if you're unfamiliar with it, as I doubt you'll find that helpful.

Thanks for the reply. I play quite a bit of poker so your terminology/jargon is all good. I play cash games maybe 3-5 times a week at the local casino blinds $2/3 buyin $100-300 (normally buy in for full amount just so I have chips to play with). Played a few tournaments in past, not to high stake $300-750 buy in but like I said start stack of 40k so quite a bit of room to chill. Going to be entering two tournaments now 1 for $1250 and the other couple days after for $2500 both start stack 10k blinds 50/100 no anti until 5/6th level and each level is 40 mins. Looked up last years results and there were 2000 entrants and top 200 got paid. They are expecting more participants this year as well.

    Hi there,

I'm very sorry I didn't reply sooner. Without boring you with the details, I've been completing a course IRL and and had to hand in a major project. I'm all done now and would live to hear how you got on in your tourney and perhaps discuss strategy.
