    Default Poker in '09

What kind of year have you had over the felt (virtual or real)?

I've had a fun year of exclusively online play and will be posting a profit of ~$2500.

If you'd offered me this midway through January when I was losing $600 after a disasterous first few thousand hands of the year, I would have snapped your hand off. At that -$600 point my head was a mess poker-wise. I was in the viscious circle of bad beats leading to bad play leading to bad beats. Luckily I was able to drop in stakes, re-focus on what I was doing and bounce back. By early April I was back in the black and it felt great.

I then started building my Full Tilt bankroll from an initial amount of $208 (all my play up to this point had been on Stars). I started at 8-tables of $5 nl & pl and steadily moved up through the limits (once I had ~40 buy-ins for the next level). In August my FT roll hit $2K and I was up to $50 nl/pl. From this point my bankroll has stagnated as I've struggled to beat $50 nl/pl for any convincing amount, but thanks to rakeback my FT roll today stands at $2495.

So that's my year. What's your been like?

    Good stuff Matt.

I've played considerably less poker in 2009 than any other year this decade, both live and online. In the past 6 months or so I've only played live a handful of times, whereas a couple of years ago I'd have played the same amount in a week or two. So I think I've got a bit rusty.

As for online poker, when I have played it's been almost exclusively in cash games, which is a change from previous years when I'd play nothing but SNGs. I guess I've gotten bored of tournament play, and cash games are great when you have time commitment issues.

However, in 2010 I'm looking to play far more; both live and online.

Matt ... congratulations on a good year. Read my latest article on becoming a poker pro, I think you're ready! Seriously, I think it is great that one can enjoy poker as a hobby, not be consumed by it and make it a profitable endeavor.
To the true gambler, money is never an end in itself, but simply a tool; as language is to thought.

    Well I can beat $5.

I have had a good 2009. I've played more live than online and have won a few tournaments (nothing major) and won enough to pay for a nice trip to Mexico in the summer. The last few months have been a bit poor but I'm looking to play a lot next year, so roll on 2010.

I reserve the right to wait until 2009 is actually over before I submit a report. :)
