Default Tips on upcoming $50 Re-buy Qualifier

Hey Im new to these forums and have been playing a couple of years mainly online at least 2-3 hrs daily. Ive played online tourneys but this Fri Dec 4th Im going to my 1st 'Real' tourney at Turning Stone casino in Oneida, NY as I live in Upstate NY.

This is a $50 No Limit re-buy Qualifier for the $750 main event on Saturday. I have been saving up so if I dont qualify I just may pay the entry fee. Any tips on the Re-buy Qualifier? I was thinking people are going to be aggressive real early since there is the re-buy. Standard tourney with 20 min levels then erase offs at certain levels.

    Hi Blaze

I'm not sure a $50 re-buy tournament is the best starting point, nor a $750 tournament (unless you can easily afford it). I would always recommend a freezeout for live poker virgins.

It's impossible to say how this actual tournament will pan out, or if it's full of aggressive maniacs. Do you know anyone whose played in them before?

If you're going to play then I would set yourself a limit, maybe 2 rebuy's, 1 top up (total $200). Play really tight at the start and see how the game is progressing. Depending on the structure you'll need to adjust your game. It's also worth phoning the cardroom and finding out more about the structure - then you'll know whether it's a crapshoot or not.

    Good luck.

I wouldn't do it. In a rebuy with an add-on you could easily spend $350 by the time you are done. If I wanted to play I'd just pony up the $750.

Here is an update: I entered the rebuy and there were 95 entrants. I didn't have to rebuy once as I kept an above avg. chip stack. At the end of Level 5 there was the add on. I spent 100 for a double add on of 5000.

I survived till Level 12 when I was dealt A-K offsuit. Raised full pot put me at 20000 chip remaining only 1 guy raised the rest folded. I pushed the rest in and the other guy called with QQ. Missed AK on flop, turn and river. I went out in 21st place. Top 16 got the invites. I thought I played real well and if I hit an A or K I make it but get burned again by the dreaded AK!!

Many a tournament has been ended by AK. So you're not alone there.

Well done on coming close at your first 'real' tournament, and not having any rebuys. Be sure to let us know how the next ones go.
