A tight-passive player limps in early. Folded to you in the BB. You hold:

You raise to $40. The early position limper calls. Flop:

You bet $60. The limper calls. Turn:

You bet $140. The limper raises to $280. You call. River:

You check. The limper moves all-in for $875. What should you do?

Why, because you don't think a tight/passive player would have limped with A-K and that he has to have K-Q or J-10? I think tight/passive from early position would view A-K as a drawing hand and play just the way it was played. IMO if you think there is a sniper behind every tree you will throw away a lot of winning hands. Of course, this is what makes these discussions fun ... we don't all have to agree!

I do agree with you that the sniper mentality can cripple you. I guess I just see this guy having KQ or JT as much more likely, given his actions, than AK, which I discount for two reasons: I don't care how passive you are, limping with AK??? Maybe. And then I just think it's unlikely for both of us to wake up with the same hand. Can it happen? Absolutely. Does it happen? Yes it does. But I now feel I'm in the realm of a coin flip... hmmm... he could have the same hand as I do... Why risk it for all your chips? I think the turn pretty much tells you what you need to know in this hand. Passive and tight seems more likely to me to limp with KQ or JT... exactly the hands that will kill you here.

But like you said. You definitely don't want to get into the pattern where you see trouble under every rock.

Actually, with three likely hands that he has... AK, KQ, or JT... it's not even a coin flip, it's a 30% chance to be right. Don't want to flush my stack down the toilet on those numbers.

So it comes down to: if you're right, it's a push, and you don't win anything. If you're wrong, your stack is gone. That doesn't seem like a great equation to me!

And again, I'm sorry for flogging a dead horse... sure a TP could view AK this way. Just as easily as he could KQ or JT! Do you want door #1, #2, or #3?

Well becuase he's labled as tight/passive and that he min-raised the turn after just flatting the flop I am not putting him on JT anytime soon. I honestly don't know what to put him on. Did he limp AK? Did he limp QQ for some reason? Is KQ in his range? Any way you put it I cannot see a reasonable hand we can beat. I don't see TAPs limping KJ and under in early position. I'd be sick to my stomach but I may have to throw the hand away. If I'm calling it's either cause I'm hoping for 1/2 the pot against his AK or I think for some stupid reason that he's gone crazy and is bluffing me.

EDIT: Let me add AQ as a hand we can beat. He would definitely play AQ and he may call a bet on the flop. But would he min-raise the turn thinking his hand is good? Does he shove on the river? Maybe...maybe not...I'm still unsure which makes me fold.

And that's the point as far as I'm concerned... what are you hoping for here? To split the pot, or maybe pick off a bluff. For all my chips????

Hmmm this is quite a tough one. However I have a different theory for what the villain is holding. I think he probably has 22. He limps in, calls a small raise. Flats his set on the flop, min raises on the turn and shoves the river.

Given the betting pattern and the fact the best we`re really hoping for is a split I say fold.
