This is a big problem, and I don't think there is an easy answer. The obvious one is to arm the ships, but when you go down that route then the pirates stock up and the whole thing gets worse and they start killing the crews, even the unarmed ones. Maybe they should put more security on the ships such as barbed wire (to stop them climbing aboard) or more high tech measures. Or maybe they should recruit the services of Jack Sparrow, to pirate the pirates.
Yes, it is an escalating problem. At least the French "Strapped a set on"...good for them even thought they lost one hostage. This has got to stop and just ignoring it is like tacit approval that OK ... we'll just keep paying ransoms.![]()

OK ... how about this for a thought:
Until extreme force is used against these terrorists, they will continue their practices. I agree with giving them the $2MM, free the captain, then obliterate them.
The U.S. and any other nations with a backbone should begin the practice of setting up dummy freighters - armed to the teeth. When threatened, respond with overwhelming “shock and awe” - then stream the video over the media and the internet.
Any other thoughts?
