Default Does this happen a lot?

I was in an MTT last night, got moved to a supertight table so loosened my game and scooped up some small pots. Another player for some reason took offence at my play and declared that I was a "stupid noob". We exchanged a few heated words but then it all settled.

A little later he got into a pot against a rock, failed to pick up on the signs that his opponent has the nuts and busted out with top pair. I (probably a little stupidly) called him a "dumbass" and he went ballistic. He started f-ing and blinding, looked up my stats and started hurling abuse at me. This went on for about 10 mins until I got moved to another table.

I wasn't too fussed about this guy's abusive comments and largely ignored him, but just wondered if other people have had similar experiences online.

Oh, and I finished 7/1000 in the tournament. So much for being a noob :)

Apart from the good folk here at Pokerology, people often tend to act like complete morons when posting stuff online. You only need to look at comments on sites like YouTube to realise this. Therefore it shouldn't be surprising that people behave like arseholes when playing a card game that is steeped in machismo.

If it happens again just hit the ignore button and don't let it bother you.

Happens all the time... I've got dozens of people muted because they rant or antagonise in chat.

Sometimes people are genuinely funny as well. In a game last week there were a couple Dutch guys at my table and we exchanged a couple friendly comments, in Dutch, after checking down a pot after we all missed our draws (I took it down w/ a pair of nines). A German commented "Hilfe, ich bin von Kiffern umringt!! ".

I immediately Googled that and it turns out Kiffer is slang for pothead.

Yeah you're quite right. There's something "safe" about being behind a monitor that enables us to say things that we wouldn't say to someone in a face-to-face situation. Same principles as when we are driving and it's why road rage is such a problem.

I will indeed hit the ignore button next time. Truth be told, I may have exacerbated a situation that could easily have been avoided if I'd have just let it be. This isn't like me and I'm not proud of it.

All right, then, let's let bygones be bygones. Anyway, I take it all back. Fair enough?

I like being called names at the online tables, especially by players who do not understand why I might have done something and it looked foolish or stupid to them. I call these insults/statements "trophies" and I try to collect as many as I can.

I love these guys. They they often increase the action because of the tilt they generate, they can liven up a quiet table and they are just generally good entertainment.

In some of my regular sites there are a couple players that do that everyday all day...I think they figure that it must not be poker if you don't insult someone at least every two hands.

I have to admit that as soon as their offense is directed at me I try to fire them up even more in a passive aggressive sort of way. I don't get directly insulting but I do try to act like a noob with some veiled patronizing thrown in for good measure. It's all good fun though

I came up against a guy a few weeks back, about midway through a large MTT. He got moved to my table and promptly started shoving every hand. And I mean EVERY hand. He wasn't short stacked or anything, just decided that this was the optimal strategy.

Anyways, the table immediately tightened up. Nobody was playing marginal hands as they knew that once it got round to this guy (let's call him 'the shipper') they'd be facing an all-in raise. The shipper started getting cocky in the chat box: "they're all scared of me," he said. "nobody's got the balls to face me". And so on.

Of course, what was really happening was that the while table was just patiently waiting for a hand that they could play back at him. After he stole about a dozen blinds it was very enjoyable to see him get taken down in 2 hands. He stopped chatting after that :)
